Creating Community One Meal at a Time
At the South London Neighbourhood Resource Centre, community is built one connection at a time. Serving children, youth, adults, seniors, families, and newcomers, the Centre creates opportunities for residents to connect, learn, and thrive through a community development approach that empowers people to achieve their full potential and enjoy a healthy quality of life.
Through the Multi-Generational Cooking Group, participants can share family recipes, learn new cooking skills, and connect with neighbours from different cultures and generations in a welcoming and supportive environment.
One participant shared, “We have shared with people we didn’t know, yet we treated each other like family.” Another reflected that they had never cooked before, but the program sparked a new curiosity and confidence in the kitchen.
Beyond preparing meals, participants are building relationships, gaining confidence, and creating a sense of belonging. The collaborative nature of the program allows people of all abilities to participate and support one another, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and included.
The Sifton Family Foundation is proud to support this program through a grant that brings people together across generations, celebrates diverse cultural traditions, and creates meaningful experiences that participants carry home to share with their families and communities.
