Helping Seniors Stay Connected Through Technology
Technology has become essential for everyday life—from keeping in touch with family and friends to accessing banking, healthcare, and community services. Yet for many seniors, navigating the digital world can feel overwhelming.
Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Sifton Family Foundation, more seniors across London will have the opportunity to build the skills and confidence they need through the London Public Library's TechKnow: Technology for Seniors program.
Following a highly successful pilot in 2025, TechKnow is expanding from four sessions to sixteen sessions over the coming year. The program will be offered in 13 London Public Library branches, reaching approximately 96 seniors across the city.
Delivered in small groups of just six participants, the free six-week program provides hands-on, supportive instruction at a pace designed specifically for older adults. Participants learn practical digital skills such as protecting themselves from online fraud, managing passwords, using email and video chat, online banking and shopping, accessing social media safely, and making the most of the Library's digital resources, including e-books, streaming services, and online learning platforms.
Courses are led by instructors from Fanshawe Corporate Training Solutions, supported by senior facilitators and London Public Library staff. Participants can bring their own devices or use library laptops, ensuring everyone can take part regardless of the technology they own.
Beyond building digital skills, TechKnow creates opportunities for connection. Learning together in neighbourhood library branches helps foster friendships, reduce social isolation, and strengthen participants' confidence to engage with their communities and the increasing digital world around them.
The Sifton Family Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help people thrive and strengthen our community. Congratulations to the London Public Library team on the continued success and expansion of this meaningful program.
