GLOW Mentoring: Building Confidence and Connections
At the Sifton Family Foundation, we believe strong communities begin with confident, supported young people. That’s why we were proud to provide a grant to Big Brothers Big Sisters Serving Grand Erie, Halton and Hamilton to deliver the GLOW mentoring program.
GLOW stands for Girls Linking our Worlds. The program is designed for elementary-aged youth who identify as girls and focuses on empowerment, leadership development, and helping participants feel confident in all aspects of their identity. Through supportive mentoring relationships, guided discussions, and creative and physical activities, participants develop skills that strengthen their sense of self and their connection to others.
Delivered as a weekly after-school program over ten sessions, GLOW provides a welcoming space where youth can explore different cultures, celebrate diversity, and learn strategies for physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The program also nurtures empathy, communication skills, and responsible decision-making.
With support from the Sifton Family Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters delivered GLOW in four Grand Erie District School Board elementary schools in Brantford that had previously been on a waitlist. As one participant shared:
“This program has opened my eyes to how nice people can be and that I can be confident in my own skin. Some people go through things we don’t know, and that’s no reason to judge anyone. This program is amazing—I just wish it was longer!”
Programs like GLOW highlight the power of mentorship. The Sifton Family Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help youth feel valued, capable, and connected.
